Have you ever been captivated by the surreal and fantastical world of Journey to the West? Now, let us set aside the pilgrimage of Xuanzang and his disciples for a moment, and instead delve into the enigmatic inner world of another great master - Francisco Goya. This course will take an art historical perspective to deeply explore the life and work of the Spanish artistic giant, Francisco Goya (1746-1828). We will uncover the hidden codes in his artworks, analyze his unique painting philosophy, and explore the dramatic and mysterious aspects of his life. Course Content: Goya's Life: From his early career as a court painter to his later "Black Paintings", we will trace Goya's life journey and understand how the changing times influenced his artistic style. Painting Philosophy: Goya was a pioneer of Romanticism. His works are filled with social critique, profound insights into human nature, and depictions of nightmarish visions. We will analyze his works to comprehend how he utilized color, composition, and brushwork to express these complex emotions and ideas. Analysis of Representative Works: We will delve into Goya's representative paintings, such as The Family of Charles IV, The Third of May 1808, and Saturn Devouring His Son, to decode the historical context, cultural significance, and artistic value behind these masterpieces.
